GLOSSARY TERM

BL

Stands for: Bill of Lading

A document issued by the carrier that acknowledges receipt of goods for shipment, serves as the contract of carriage and, in its original form, can act as a document of title.

The BL is the central shipping document. Under an LC, the bank checks it against the credit. Sea waybills, which are not documents of title, are sometimes used instead to speed release at destination.
