GLOSSARY TERM

Bonded warehouse

A customs-supervised facility that lets an export factory import raw materials such as fabric and trims without paying import duty, provided the goods are exported as finished products.

In Bangladesh, factories with a bonded warehouse licence can import inputs duty-free for export production, usually financed by back-to-back LCs. The licence is one reason compliance checks look at customs records as well as audits.
