GLOSSARY TERM

Shrinkage

The change in a garment’s or fabric’s dimensions after washing and drying, usually expressed as a percentage of the original length and width.

Dimensional change is tested to ISO 5077 after a washing procedure such as ISO 6330, and a buyer typically specifies a tolerance. Knit fabrics shrink more lengthwise, so patterns allow for it.
