GLOSSARY TERM

Certificate of origin

A document issued by an authorised body that certifies the country where goods were produced, used to claim preferential duty or to meet import rules.

For EU preferences the proof is a statement on origin by a REX-registered exporter. Other markets, such as Japan, ask for a certificate issued by the authority nominated by the exporting country. Requirements differ by destination and scheme.
